Do I have to be an English major? No. Our student tutors are chosen on the basis of faculty recommendations, writing samples, interviews, and mock tutoring sessions. Tutors come from diverse backgrounds, from education majors to philosophy majors, but all are committed to serving as interested and helpful readers. Do I have to have work study money? No, but work-study students may work more hours than students paid by the Learning Assistance Center. How do I apply? To become a Writing Center tutor, ask a faculty member who is familiar with your writing and your interaction with other students to write a recommendation for you. Recommendations may be sent to Coordinator of Writing Support Services Teresa Swartz Roberts via campus mail or e-mail at teresa.roberts@maine.edu. Next, submit three writing samples, either in hard copy or via e-mail, to teresa.roberts@maine.edu. At least one of the pieces should be analytical, but a cross-section of writing styles is requested. Keep your grade point average above 3.0. Prepare for an interview and mock tutoring session with the Writing Center director. |
